The Story of Zenita Chorro: A Resilient Woman Seeking Independence and Work Opportunities
Zenita Chorro is 35 years old, married, and the mother of eight children. She lives in a community where employment opportunities are extremely limited, especially for women. Despite these challenges, Zenita stands as a powerful example of resilience, determination, and the desire to work hard to provide a better life for her family.
At present, Zenita does not have a stable or permanent job. To support her household, she relies on informal income-generating activities. During mango season, she sells mangoes and minani, using natural and seasonal resources as her main source of income. However, this work is temporary and does not offer financial stability throughout the year.
When earnings from her small business are not enough, Zenita looks for other ways to secure food for her family. On some days, she goes to the beach in search of fish or any available food to feed her children and her husband. The family’s situation has become even more difficult because her husband has stopped working at the salt pans. Due to flooding and excess water during the rainy season, the salt pans are no longer operational, cutting off one of their main sources of income.
Despite the hardship, Zenita has not given up on her dreams. She strongly desires to build her own business and become financially independent. Her goal is to be an empowered woman—someone who can support her family through her own effort and labor, without relying solely on her husband or others.
Zenita makes it clear that she is willing to work in any honest job. She says she would accept opportunities such as cleaning roads, washing clothes, cooking, selling goods along the roadside, or doing domestic work. For her, dignity comes from working, no matter how small the job may seem.
However, finding employment in her community has been extremely difficult. Zenita explains that the lack of jobs affects both women and men, but women face even greater barriers. Limited opportunities, lack of access to resources, and social challenges make it especially hard for women to secure work or start sustainable businesses.
Even so, Zenita continues to wait patiently for an opportunity. She holds on to the hope that one day she will find decent work that allows her to support her children and regain control over her future. Her greatest wish is to achieve independence and not depend financially on men.
